Topic : Social media abuse and addiction



INTRODUCTION


Conscientization is a popular education and social concept developed by Brazilian educational theorist Paulo Freire. It includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one’s life that are illuminated by understanding. 

             As part of B.Ed curriculum we have to organize a conscientization programme. It was an individual activity.  So I decide to conduct an awareness programme on topic the “social media abuse and addiction”. I am one of the teacher trainee of HKM College of Education conducted a conscientization programme during the teaching practice in  Government HSS Palayamkunnu school. It was a one day programme  conducted during the time of online teaching practice. The  programme was conducted on  30th  November 2020  Monday.

 

 NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE


            With the advent of advanced technology, growing use of mobile phones and other gadgets are considerably harming the younger generation. Students are developing a strong connection with their mobile phones, which is leading to a massive loss in their concentration and time spend in studies. Parents and Teachers usually face problem in combating the distraction of students. Students should have a detailed knowledge regarding positive and negative effects of mobile phones and other gadgets.

 

 OBJECTIVE


Ø  To give detailed knowledge regarding the positive and negative aspects of social media usage among students.

Ø  To impart knowledge about the adverse effect of mobile phones.

Ø  To provide information regarding the abuse of internet.

Ø  To describe about various health hazards due to the overuse of mobile phones.

 

 PROCEDURE


 I decided that it should be a good chance to give valuable information to the students based on their life. So I chosen the topic ‘social media abuse and addiction’ for my conscientization programme. The program was conducted on 30th November 2020.  I selected plus one standard students for the programme.  I gave information about the adverse effect of media among students. It was an interactive session. I asked some questions to the students. They answered the questions very well. They also asked their doubts to me. I could clarify them properly. I also mention the positive and negative impact of social media among the use of it improperly. All the important points regarding the social media abuse are presented through power point presentation. The topic was introduced the video that depicts the social media addiction described by a student in a school. The class found effective and at last they said they are not addicted to social media.

 

 IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM


The students were actively co operate to the programme. The teachers in the school support me also. The students were shows interest for the conscientization programme. Students had perfect knowledge on the use and effect of social media.

 

CONCLUSION


            I think the program was effective. I could create awareness among the students about the impact of social media.  I could satisfy the objective of the program also. I executed the program in a good way and made students aware of the use and abuse of the social media. They could understand the disadvantage of mobile abuse and how it affects our life. Social media addiction is harmful to their future career. 

            At the end of the concentration program the students was understood the influence of social media and importance of positive impacts from social media.  I got a good feedback from the students. I hope I could convey what in my mind in an effective way that too on a‘social media’- Google meet platform.
